Audience Overlap Is Quietly Taxing Your Own Auction

When two ad sets in the same account target overlapping people, Meta's auction only shows one of them to any given person — the other is competing against your own campaign, not a competitor's, and losing. That ad set keeps its assigned budget but rarely gets a real chance to perform, which quietly wastes spend and muddies what the performance data is actually telling you.

How this happens without anyone noticing

It's rarely intentional. A cold prospecting ad set and a broader interest-based ad set often end up targeting largely the same pool of people without anyone realizing it, especially once several campaigns accumulate over months. Two lookalike audiences built from similar seed lists can overlap by 50% or more and get treated as two separate opportunities when they're functionally one.

The audit that catches it

  • Use Meta's Audience Overlap tool under Audiences to check any ad sets you suspect might be targeting similar people — it's built in and takes minutes.

  • Pay particular attention to multiple lookalike audiences built from similar or overlapping seed lists — this is the most common source of unnoticed overlap.

  • Check whether a broad, algorithm-driven campaign is quietly overlapping with a narrower manual campaign running at the same time — the broad one usually wins the auction and the narrow one just burns budget.

  • Consolidate genuinely overlapping ad sets rather than running them in parallel — one campaign with the combined budget outperforms two competing for the same impressions.

It's a five-minute check that most accounts never run, because nothing about a poorly performing overlapping ad set looks different from ordinary underperformance — until you actually look for the overlap.
