How to Ungroup Image Variants in Meta Ads Manager

2 min read

If Meta has automatically bundled a few of your uploaded images together as "variants" and you need each ratio to run strictly in its intended placement — not wherever Meta's delivery system chooses — you'll need to ungroup them. Here's how.

Why images get grouped in the first place

When you upload multiple images to the same ad and some of them are the same creative in different aspect ratios (say, a square and a vertical crop of the same product shot), Meta's media picker automatically detects the match and groups them as variants of a single creative. This is meant to save you creative slots and simplify management.

The trade-off: grouped variants deliver flexibly. Meta can serve any ratio in any placement if its algorithm predicts that will perform better — even if you built a specific ratio for a specific surface.

When you need to ungroup

Ungroup your variants if:

  • You have placement-specific branding or text that only makes sense in one exact ratio

  • Legal or compliance requirements mean certain crops can't run on certain surfaces

  • You've tested and found that letting Meta choose the ratio is hurting performance or aesthetics in specific placements

How to ungroup variants

  1. Go to your ad's Ad creative section in Ads Manager.

  2. Hover over the thumbnail of the grouped variant set.

  3. Click Edit to open the customization window.

  4. Look for the ungroup option within that variant set — this separates the different ratios back into independent, individually controlled assets.

  5. Once ungrouped, assign each asset to its specific intended placement manually.

After ungrouping: assign placements manually

Ungrouping alone doesn't restrict where each image shows — you still need to manually map each ratio to its placement:

  1. In the Ad creative section, edit each individual (now ungrouped) asset.

  2. Assign it to the specific placement(s) you want it to run in — for example, your 9:16 asset to Stories and Reels only, and your 1:1 asset to Feed only.

  3. Save your changes and preview the ad to confirm each placement is pulling the correct crop.

A quick trade-off to keep in mind

Ungrouping gives you control, but it also means you lose the flexible delivery optimization Meta's algorithm was providing — where it tests which ratio performs best regardless of "intended" placement. For most advertisers, grouped variants with flexible delivery perform just fine. Ungroup only when you have a specific, deliberate reason your creative can't tolerate an unexpected crop.
