Meta CPCs Aren't Just Rising — They're Diverging by Vertical

"Meta's gotten expensive" is a common complaint that treats cost-per-click as one number moving in one direction across the whole platform. It isn't. Retail and ecommerce CPCs have recently moved in opposite directions — retail costs climbing while ecommerce costs actually fell, as Meta's AI-driven optimization sharpened efficiency unevenly across categories.

Why this matters for how you read your own account

An account in a vertical where CPCs are climbing platform-wide will show rising costs no matter how well it's managed — that's a market condition, not a performance failure. An account in a vertical where CPCs are falling that's still seeing rising costs has a real, account-specific problem worth investigating, because it's moving against the category's overall trend.

How to actually diagnose rising costs

  • Check whether cost trends in your category are publicly reported or benchmarked anywhere before assuming the account itself is the problem.

  • Compare your CPC trend against your own historical baseline over a longer window, not just the last week, to separate real change from normal noise.

  • Rule out account-specific causes — audience saturation, creative fatigue, learning phase disruption — before concluding the platform itself simply got more expensive.

  • If costs are rising against a vertical-wide trend that's falling, that's a genuine signal worth investigating rather than shrugging off as 'the platform.'

"Meta's expensive" is rarely the whole story. The more useful question is whether your costs are moving with your category or against it — because those two situations call for completely different responses.
