Meta Ads Not Converting? 5 Beginner Mistakes to Check First

Traffic is coming in, the campaign is spending, and nothing is converting. Before touching budget or targeting, a handful of basic setup mistakes are worth ruling out first.

1. Wrong campaign objective

A campaign optimized for traffic or engagement will get you clicks and likes, not purchases — because that's literally what the algorithm is being told to chase. If the goal is sales or leads, the objective needs to match, not just the ad copy.

2. No working pixel or conversion tracking

If the pixel isn't firing correctly, Meta's delivery system is optimizing blind — it can't learn who converts if it can't see conversions happen. This is worth checking first, before anything else, because it quietly breaks every other optimization downstream.

3. Landing page friction

Slow load times, a checkout that requires an account, or a page that doesn't match what the ad promised will all kill conversion rate regardless of how good the ad itself is. The ad's only job is to get the click; the page has to do the rest.

4. Audience too narrow, too early

A tightly restricted audience can starve the algorithm of the data it needs to find patterns, especially in the first days of a new ad set. Broader targeting with strong creative often outperforms narrow targeting with weak creative, particularly early on.

5. Judging performance too early

Campaigns need to exit the learning phase before their real numbers mean much — that's roughly 50 conversion events in a rolling window. Killing an ad set on day two because the CPA looks bad is usually judging a number that hasn't stabilized yet.

Fix tracking first, objective second, landing page third — then and only then start adjusting targeting and budget.

Most "my ads aren't converting" situations trace back to one of these five, not to some hidden targeting secret.
