Should Your Small Business Even Run Meta Ads? A Simple Gut-Check
Not every small business needs to be running Meta ads right now, and that's a more useful starting point than jumping straight into campaign setup.
Ads make sense when
You already have some proof the offer works — organic sales, referrals, or a waitlist — because ads amplify something that's already converting, they rarely create demand from nothing
You can handle the volume ads bring — inventory, fulfillment, or booking capacity that can actually absorb more customers
You have a way to track what happens after the click — a pixel, a CRM, something that tells you whether spend turned into revenue
Your margins or customer lifetime value can absorb the cost of acquiring a customer through paid media, not just organic reach
Ads are probably premature when
The offer itself hasn't been validated with real, non-paid customers yet
There's no tracking in place, so results would be invisible either way
The business is entirely local and low-margin, where a much smaller, more targeted spend (or even organic and referral work) would go further than a broad ad budget
A simple gut-check
If someone asked "how do you know your customers exist and will pay?" and the honest answer is "I don't yet, I'm hoping ads will tell me" — that's usually a sign to validate the offer first, in a smaller and cheaper way, before putting media spend behind it.
Ads are a multiplier, not a discovery tool. They tend to work best once there's already a real signal to amplify.
