A Safer Way to Test AI Agents on Your Meta Ad Account

AI agents connected through Meta's Ads MCP server can now have their permissions controlled directly in Meta Business Suite. If you're in a testing phase with a new agent, that permission panel is the first place to go before letting it near a live account.
Why the default settings are risky for testing
Every available permission, budget control, campaign creation, targeting edits, creative edits, and status changes, defaults to enabled the moment an agent is connected. For an agent you already trust in production, that might be fine. For an agent you're still evaluating, it's a lot of surface area to hand over on day one.
A safer starting configuration
If you're testing a new agent, it's worth disabling the higher-risk permissions first and re-enabling them only once you've seen how the agent behaves:
Disable budget control so the agent can't set or change daily and lifetime budgets while you're still evaluating it.
Disable campaign, ad set, and ad status edits so it can't pause, activate, or otherwise change what's live.
Disable creative edits so your media, copy, headlines, and CTAs stay untouched during the test window.
Leave view access on, along with the general "take actions" toggle if you want to see what the agent would attempt, without letting those actions actually go live.
A simple rollout approach
Connect the agent with the account-level "take actions" toggle off, so you can observe its intended actions without any changes happening.
Once you're comfortable with what it's proposing, enable lower-risk permissions first, such as audience targeting edits.
Add budget and status control only after you've watched it operate safely for a reasonable stretch.
Revisit the permission list periodically, especially after connecting any new agent or after Meta updates what's available.
None of this requires disabling AI agents altogether. It just means treating new integrations the way you'd treat a new team member: full visibility from day one, expanding access only as trust is earned.
