Facebook Ad Creative Checklist: 9 Things to Check Before You Hit Publish

2 min read

Before you launch that ad, run through this checklist. Most cropped, mismatched, or underperforming creative issues trace back to one of these being skipped.

1. Do you have the right ratio for each placement?

Feed wants 1:1 or 4:5. Stories and Reels want 9:16. If you're running across both, upload both ratios rather than letting one get auto-cropped into the other.

2. Are your variants grouped — or do you need them ungrouped?

If you uploaded multiple ratios of the same creative, confirm whether you're relying on Meta's flexible delivery (grouped) or need strict placement control (ungrouped).

3. Is key content inside the safe zone?

Logos, text, and CTAs near the edges of a Stories/Reels asset risk being covered by UI elements (profile name, reply bar) or cropped out on certain devices. Keep critical content in the center ~80% of the frame.

4. Is Advantage+ creative helping or hurting this specific ad?

For simple, clean creative it's usually fine. For text-heavy or tightly branded creative, double-check the auto-enhanced preview before publishing — it applies to all media in the ad, not selectively.

5. Have you previewed every placement, not just Feed?

Ads Manager lets you preview how your ad renders in each selected placement. Click through Stories, Reels, and Audience Network previews specifically — Feed is rarely where cropping problems show up.

6. Is your creative limit being used efficiently?

You get 10 creatives per ad and up to 10 variants per creative. Make sure you're using variants for ratio differences of the same concept, and separate creative slots for genuinely different concepts.

7. Does your destination URL match the creative?

When customizing per placement or per media asset, it's easy to leave a leftover or mismatched destination URL on one variant. Check each asset individually, not just the ad as a whole.

8. Is your text overlay legible at Stories scale?

Text that's readable in a Feed thumbnail can be too small or awkwardly placed once cropped into a full-screen vertical format. Preview at actual size, not just in the editor thumbnail.

9. Have you checked format/objective compatibility with your placements?

Not every ad objective or format is eligible for every placement (e.g., some catalog/lead formats may exclude Audience Network). Confirm nothing you've selected is silently ineligible.

Quick pre-publish checklist

  • Correct ratio uploaded for each placement

  • Variant grouping strategy confirmed (grouped vs ungrouped)

  • Key content inside safe zone

  • Advantage+ creative reviewed, not just left on default

  • Every placement previewed individually

  • Creative and variant limits used intentionally

  • Destination URLs checked per asset

  • Text legible at Stories/Reels scale

  • Objective/format compatible with all selected placements

Run through this before every launch and you'll catch the vast majority of cropping, mismatch, and delivery issues before they cost you spend.
