How Meta's New Per-Ad Audience Targeting Actually Works
Meta has quietly rolled out one of the more interesting targeting changes in a while: the ability to set age and gender targeting for each individual ad, not just at the ad set level.
Where to find it
At the ad set level, when you use the traditional audience targeting option, found by clicking "Further limit your audience," you may now see a new toggle: "Choose an audience for each creative."
Turning this on unlocks per-ad audience targeting. Once it's enabled, go to the ad level and create or edit an ad. Right below the media selection, you'll see a new "Audience" section where you can set a specific age range and gender for that individual ad creative.
What actually happens after you set it
Your ad will be directed toward the audience you selected for that specific creative, but it can still reach other people Meta thinks are likely to respond. This isn't a hard filter. It's a strong preference layered on top of Meta's broader delivery system.
Why this is a meaningful change
Until now, audience targeting lived entirely at the ad set level, meaning every ad inside that ad set shared the same age and gender settings. If you wanted different creative pointed at different demographics, you had to build separate ad sets for each one. This update removes that requirement for age and gender specifically.
It's a small toggle with a real structural impact on how you can build campaigns going forward.
