How to Customize Meta Ads Creative for Every Placement (2026 Guide)

One of the biggest upgrades to Meta Ads Manager in recent years is the ability to upload multiple media assets for a single ad and customize how each one shows up across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Audience Network. Here's how to actually use it, step by step.

Step 1: Start a new ad and open the creative wizard

In Ads Manager, click Create, choose your objective, and in the Ad setup section click Set up creative. Choose either Image or Video to open the creative setup wizard — you can add both images and videos in the next step regardless of which one you pick first.

Step 2: Upload up to ten images and videos

In the Media section you can select up to ten images and videos for a single ad. Switch between the Images and Videos tabs at the top to mix media types. If you upload the same image in different aspect ratios, Meta automatically groups them together as variants — more on that in a separate post.

Step 3: Crop for each ratio

Hover over a selected thumbnail and click Crop to open the crop editor. Toggle between Original and Crop, and adjust the framing so your key content — logo, product, face, headline — stays inside the safe zone for every ratio you plan to use.

Step 4: Decide on Advantage+ creative

In the Enhancements section, you'll see a toggle for Advantage+ creative, which automatically adjusts your media for different placements and audiences. It's worth testing, but understand that any enhancements you turn on apply to all your media at once — there's no per-asset control.

Step 5: Customize individual assets by placement

Once your ad is set up, go to the Ad creative section, hover over any thumbnail, and click Edit. This opens a window where you can adjust the crop, choose which placements that specific asset runs in, change its text, and even set a different destination URL — all without touching the rest of your creative.

Step 6: Preview before you publish

Before finishing, scroll through the ad-level preview to see how each placement will actually render. This is the fastest way to catch a cropping problem before it costs you impressions.

The extra five minutes this takes at setup is what separates ads that look intentional across every surface from ads that look like an afterthought on Stories.
