Meta Ad Placements Explained: Where Your Ads Can Actually Show Up
Before you upload a single creative to Meta Ads Manager, it helps to know exactly where that ad could appear. Placement decides your aspect ratio, your format, and often your entire creative strategy — get it wrong and you'll be fixing cropped or mismatched ads after the fact.
The five placement surfaces
Meta ads can run across five surfaces:
Facebook — Feed, Stories, Reels, in-stream video, Marketplace, right column
Instagram — Feed, Stories, Reels, Explore
Messenger — inbox placements, Stories
WhatsApp — Status placements, WhatsApp inbox ads (availability varies by region and campaign type)
Meta Audience Network — third-party apps and websites in Meta's ad network
Why placement determines your creative format
Each surface has different native shapes:
Placement | Typical ratio | Format notes
Feed (Facebook/Instagram) | 1:1 or 4:5 | Square or slightly vertical performs best
Stories (Facebook/Instagram) | 9:16 | Full-screen vertical, safe zones top/bottom
Reels | 9:16 | Vertical, designed for sound-on video
Messenger inbox | 1:1 | Square, compact
Audience Network | Varies | Often landscape banners or native formats
Running one creative across all of these without adjustment is why ads frequently look stretched, cropped, or oddly framed depending on where they land.
Automatic Placements vs Manual Placements
When setting up a campaign, you'll choose between:
Advantage+ placements (automatic) — Meta decides where to run your ad based on where it predicts the best results, across all eligible surfaces.
Manual placements — you select specific surfaces (e.g., Instagram Feed and Reels only, excluding Audience Network).
Automatic placements generally get more efficient delivery and lower costs because Meta's algorithm has more inventory to optimize across. Manual placements give you more creative and brand control but often at a higher cost per result.
How to check which placements are compatible with your ad
Not every objective or format works on every placement. For example, certain catalog or lead-gen formats may not be eligible for Audience Network. Before finalizing your ad:
Review your chosen objective and format for compatibility notes in Ads Manager.
Check the placement selection screen — Meta will grey out or flag incompatible placements automatically.
Practical takeaway
If you only build one creative asset, use Advantage+ placements with Advantage+ creative enabled and accept that Meta will auto-crop for you. If brand consistency matters, use manual placements and build a matching creative (1:1/4:5 for Feed, 9:16 for Stories/Reels) for each surface you select.
